The Lonely Planet Guide to Costa Rica opens the chapter on San Jose by saying that this isn’t the most beautiful city in the world. After a little jog around yesterday to explore the neighbourhood we would have to agree. This country’s qualities are primarily to be found outside the capital, and most tourists make their way onwards fairly quickly, preferably into the wilderness.
We are beginning to be a bit impatient to do just that, but first we have to get through a couple of days of shopping, packing, obligatory equipment checks, more packing, the opening ceremony etc. Then on Monday morning (4am) we will be bussed to someplace by the border with Panama for the start. And then the following days will test how good we were at shopping and packing!
